日本ラクロスの発展に貢献いただいたTom Hayesさんへ追悼メッセージ｜Dear Coach Hayes from JLA

1980年代後半、日本のラクロスの発展に貢献していただき、世界との架け橋となりご尽力いただいた、伝説的なラクロスコーチTom Hayesさんが2022年2月28日にお亡くなりになられました。
ここに故人のご冥福をお祈りし、追悼メッセージをお送りさせていただきます。

Tom Hayesさんへ追悼メッセージ

巨星堕つ

神様、時間を止めてください。ラクロスはあまりに重要な人々をどんどん失っています。先日は日本にラクロスをもたらしてくれたと言っても良いほど力をお貸しくださった渡辺允元侍従長が亡くなりました。そしてトム・ヘイズ氏が3月7日に亡くなりました。哀悼の意を表したいと思います。奥様を亡くした2017年にはストレスの為かご自身も心筋症を患らい生死の境をさまよいました。心配のあまり次の年にはペンシルバニアの湖畔に建つ彼の家を訪れ奥様の遺影に手を合わせました。その日は遅くまで日本のラクロスの成長、そしてそれにいかに彼が協力してくれたかに感謝の気持ちを表したのですが、彼はそのことがどれほど楽しかったか、そしてこれからの日本の活躍にいかに期待しているかを話してくれました。

Thom shared a deep friendship with many members of the JLA.

 

1989年、ＪＨＵのチームとオーストラリアのチームが来日し、最新で最強のラクロスを日本のラクロッサーに見せてくれました。その時のアメリカ側代表がトム・ヘイズ氏でした。当時の日本には招聘するだけの財力はありませんでしたので、彼らはすべてボランティアで来日してくれたのです。2006年に開催されたワールトチャンピオンシップ大会での対カナダ戦では、日本はフェースオフで80％を相手に取られていました。トムは“まずはボールを持たないとシュートはできないよね”と実に当たり前のことをアドバイスしてくれたのですが、当時の日本代表チームはフェースオフマンの強化策を十分に発揮しておりませんでしたし、むしろスティックに傷がつくのでなり手がいない、とすら言っていました。ベンチプレス85キロを超すフェースオフマンがごろごろしている昨今とは今昔の感があります。2018年のイスラエルでは毎日朝食をご一緒して様々なアドバイスをいただくことが出来ました。

トム・ヘイズ氏を我々は“コーチ！”と呼び、ラクロスの指導者として全幅の信頼と尊敬を寄せていました。しかし、彼は競技の指導者であるばかりでなく、ラクロスをスポーツとしてどのように世界に広めていくべきか深く考察し実行してきた人でもあります。オリンピック種目に取り上げられるためのプロジェクトをスタートしたのも彼でした。2028年のロスアンゼルス大会で、期待通り競技化された時に、その晴れ姿を見ていただけないのが残念です。

まさに“巨星墜つ”です。今年の七月には渡米し、墓前で日本ラクロスの最新状況を報告してこようと思います。

Bright Polar Star Has Fallen

God! Please stop  the time. We are losing vital people who have contributed so much to Lacrosse development. We recently have lost Mr. Makoto Watanabe, former Grand Chamberlain to the Emperor of Japan. He helped start up and develop Lacrosse programs in Japan simply is an understatement. Within a month, on March 7th, we have lost the greatest contributor to the Lacrosse world. The entire member of Japan Lacrosse wishes to pay deepest condolence to passing of Mr. Tom Hayes.

After sudden loss of his wife Gretchen, Tom seems to have suffered heart problem which he survived through. Wishing to ease his sorrow, I visited his house in Pennsylvania by a beautiful lake. After the dinner, we talked till late over dramatic development of the Japanese Lacrosse, and I thanked him for his sincere commitment to supporting us. He said how fun it was to see solid growth of Japan in the global scene.

In 1989, the first International Friendship was held in Japan. Amongst USA team and Australian team, Tom headed the US delegate. Noting the limited finance available from Japan, a large portion of the funding were carried out on a volunteer basis, and funds were mostly raised by each team. This event did trigger an amazing Lacrosse population growth in Japan.

In 2006, Men’s World Championship was held in Canada. The game against Canada was lost, but what characterized the loss was that Canada had almost 80% of ball possession after the face-off. Tom simply said, “You need to have a ball to score”. Japan was not catching up in developing face-off specialists. Some were even concerned with scratches made on the sticks inflicted on face offs. Now a days we have face-off specialists with bench press strength over 85kg. The time have developed. His simple remarks were always hitting the essence of the issues.

2018 in Israel, I joined his breakfast every day to hear of his precious experience and advice, and that was the last I saw him.

We call him, “Coach Hayes!”, and paid deepest respect toward his professional skillset and leadership. His world covered well beyond the sport itself but to developing s vision to propagating the sport to a global scale. He was an initiator to have Lacrosse induced into Olympic games. It seems that his effort may materialize in the coming Los Angeles Olympics in 2028. I deeply resent that we are unable to celebrate the event with him.

With passing of Coach Hayes, the world of Lacrosse has lost a huge Polar Star. I will be in Towson this year in July, and I will surely visit his grave site to present the latest update of Japan Lacrosse. Please rest in peace.
